What is APRENDE?
APRENDE is an ambitious European initiative designed to address the critical demand for accurate and
advanced nuclear reaction and decay data. These data are essential for modelling and simulation (M&S)
tools crucial to both energy-related applications—including nuclear fission and fusion—as well as
diverse non-energy fields such as healthcare, space exploration, and radiation protection.
With a clear focus on enhancing nuclear data precision and reliability, APRENDE aims to significantly
upgrade the simulation capabilities relied upon by European stakeholders. The project specifically
targets application areas deemed of highest priority within the European Union and its member states,
ensuring direct benefits to critical sectors.
A key outcome of APRENDE is the development of a strategic roadmap. This roadmap will identify existing
data gaps, propose advancements in capabilities, and incorporate cutting-edge technologies, ultimately
reinforcing Europe's global leadership in nuclear science and safety.
Funded through the European Union's EURATOM programme, APRENDE is a collaborative effort involving 39
prominent European institutions. Coordinated by CIEMAT (Spain), this ambitious project will span 48
months, positioning Europe at the forefront of nuclear research and innovation.
