Following the success of the 1stHiSPANoS Hands-on School on the Production, Detection and Use of Neutron Beams (https://indico.cern.ch/event/865322/), funded by the EC H2020 ARIEL project), the 2nd edition will take place at the Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA) of Universidad de Sevilla on May 25-29 2026.

The school, funded through the EC Horizon APRENDE project, aims at covering the experimental aspects related to the production, detection and use of neutron beams. To this purpose, the core of the school is a series of experiments that will be carried out during one week at the HISPANOS facility (www.cna.us.es/HISPANOS) of CNA in Seville, Spain. The experiments will be complemented with lectures (Interaction of neutrons with matter, production and detection of neutrons, etc.)

PARTICIPANTS

The school is open for up to 24 participants. The target audience comprises young researchers, which includes Master students, PhD students, and young postdocs. The selection of the 24 participants is the responsibility of the International Advisory Committee and will be based on the "Academic Level" and the "Letter of Interest" to be filled in the registration form.

EXPERIMENTS (25-29 May 2026, at CNA)

The experiments will make use of the CNA 3 MV tandem accelerator that hosts the HiSPANoS neutron beam facility. The participants will prepare, run and analyze experiments on:

  • Neutron activation:
    • epithermal neutrons,
    • gold foils,
    • Li-glass detector for epithermal neutrons and HPGe for gammas,
    • VX2751 CAEN digitizer.
  • Neutron time-of-flight:
    • fast monoenergetic and white neutrons,
    • EJ301/EJ309 detectors with PSD for fast neutrons,
    • VX2751 CAEN digitizer.
  • Neutron and gamma imaging
    • fast and moderated neutrons,
    • X-ray tube,
    • CCD camera with thermal and fast neutron converters.
  • Neutron moderation and shielding:
    • 252Cf neutron source,
    • detectors for neutrons (fast, epithermal and thermal) and gammas (LaBr3),
    • Cd, Pb and polyethielene shieldings.
    • CAEN DT5730 digitizer

POSTERS & BEST POSTER PRIZE

The participants are encouraged to present a poster, submitting an abstract in addition to their registration. The lecturers and the local organizing committee will select the "Best Poster", awarded with a diploma and a check of 300€.

SPONSORED BY EC-APRENDE

The registration fee, travel, meals and accommodation in the university residence for 24 participants will be fully covered by the APRENDE project.
